A quick inspection of the organ reveals many problems to the untrained eye that all need attention. The image on the left shows pipes 'leaning' and which could, at any time, collapse. Indeed, in recent weeks, one of these very pipes fractured and fell silent.
Other issues:
Mr Wood's scheme will see changes that improve the projection of sound into the nave. At present the instruments sounds superb in the Quire as the sound is directed mostly into this part of the building, but fails to support congregational singing effectively.
Additional improvements will realise the organ's potential as a recital instrument.
The slideshow below illustrates the points raised above.
Other issues:
- The leather on the bellows has deteriorated and in many parts has turned to dust leaving holes for the wind to escape
- The metal pipework that secures the wind supply has fractured at many joints, allowing wind to escape
- The 'mouth' or bottom of some of the metal pipes is collapsing and needs repair
- Weights that vibrate of the reed pipes have, in many cases, fell off and prevent any usable sound so have to be silenced until repaired
- 70 years of dust have accumilated!
- Protective woodwork covering the action of many parts of the organ has deteriorated and fallen off
